Australia’s 2025 flu season has burst onto the scene ahead of schedule, bringing with it a surge in cases and a pressing need for vaccination. With over 48,000 confirmed influenza cases already recorded—a 59% increase from the same period last year—health experts are sounding the alarm.
Dr. Michael Wright, President of the Royal Australian College of General Practitioners, emphasizes the urgency: “Now is the time to get your vaccine, particularly if you’re a vulnerable person.” The flu vaccine remains effective for up to five months, offering protection through the anticipated peak in July and August.
The early spike in cases is attributed to a combination of factors, including reduced immunity in the population and a decline in vaccination rates post-COVID. Last year, only 61% of adults over 65 and just 25% of children under five were vaccinated.
High-risk groups, such as seniors, pregnant women, young children, and those with chronic health conditions, are particularly encouraged to get vaccinated. The flu vaccine is available for free under the National Immunisation Program for eligible individuals.
Don’t let the flu catch you off guard. Schedule your vaccination today to stay protected throughout the season. For more detailed information, read the full article here: ABC News.
