These days, few would disagree that it can be difficult to navigate new trends in the decor space.
There are a million home products out there to crowd our spaces and rooms. From specialized kitchen gadgets, to sofas and throw pillows, the designs and functions are endless.
What is essential and how do you go about deciding what your home needs?
To help out, we did a survey of the most popular DIY, home design, and home improvement sites.
Six Must-Haves In Every Home
We managed to come up with a list of six must-haves for every home.
We’d all love to have an interior designer on speed dial before deciding exactly how to go about sprucing up our spaces.
But the fact of the matter is, until we win the lottery, we’ll have to settle for trusting our instincts – and a little common sense.
It always helps to consult experts, after all.
Study after study has pointed out that sleep is vital to our health and happiness. This being the case, it makes sense that comfortable bedding is a basic in any home.
“Not only is sleeping an important part of our health in renewing our body, but sleeping on the right mattress size is also an important component to receiving that good night’s rest,” says Cindy Heller of Street Directory.
There is a maze of options out there, of course. That’s why few home purchases are more confusing and fraught with anxiety than buying a mattress.
The good news is, there are now companies that offer low costs, simple and quick delivery services, and easy return policies. You don’t have toss and turn all night over this purchase.
Chairs are essential in every house, no matter how big or small that home happens to be.
There is a wide range of chairs available in the market today. Some prefer chairs with cushions, others go for lean and elegant chairs.
What type of chair fits your house depends on your preference and on the theme of your chosen furniture and decor style.
“It anchors the room, it makes a statement and sets the mood and style for every other piece in the room,” says Marcello Luzi of WPL Interior Design.
You might favor benches or stools in some rooms, for instance. Whatever you decide on, make sure it’s worth your investment. You’ll be sitting on it for a while.
Indoor plants absorb carbon dioxide, purify the air, and help to deter illness, ease tension and lower stress. No less than NASA has revealed that houseplants can remove up to 87 percent of air toxin in 24 hours.
Plants create a relaxed and happy ambiance. They help keep oxygen flowing through your apartment.
Studies have also proven that indoor plants improve concentration and productivity by up to 15 percent!
From a design perspective, Kareen Liez of Home Design Lover says plants provide a contrast to hard surfaces.
“That is why interior designers would place plants near brick walls or sharp corners,” says Liez. “Making the area appear softer will result into a more comfortable feeling and well-being in the spaces.”
A Good Set of Dishes
You’d run into absurdities trying to argue that you don’t need dishes! Invest in one good set. You can dress them up or down with linens and extra serving pieces.
As far as colors go, your best are classical, simple, white pieces that you can match with anything, says Blessed Beyond Crazy. A white bone china plate will look great with the vintage glasses.
Think ahead. There may only be one or two people in your household, but it’s wise to plan ahead for bigger families, parties, and gatherings.
Consider your space and storage restrictions before buying anything, though.
We all enjoy a sun-drenched picture window, but there are also times when we need to draw the curtains. That is just one of the reasons why your home needs window treatments.
Curtains allow you to control the amount of light in your home, and add an additional layer of insulation.
Window treatments reduce energy bills all year long this way. They also add to the decor and character of your home, enhancing the style, says Danica Rog for Fresh Home.
Art For Your Walls
One of the basic principles of interior design is that every room needs a single design element that will instantly draw the eye into the space. A great piece of wall art is an ideal solution.
When chosen thoughtfully, the right wall art can lift the entire aesthetic of your home, so bide your time choosing.
Once you find a painting or wall hanging that you love, you can use that piece as the inspiration for the color palette in any room.
“If you are indecisive about what kind of furniture you should purchase or what your color palette should be, choose a piece of wall art that you truly adore and use that to inspire your decorating,” says Maria Remedios for LIFEIX.
Before You Start …
Unlike fashion, buying a sofa or coffee table in this season’s fad requires serious consideration.
No matter what city you live in, you want quality and you want your investment to last. Mistakes can’t be undone with a quick trip to the thrift store, after all.
Before you make any big purchases, measure the length and width of each room you intend to decorate, along with the ceiling height and elements that could get in the way.
You don’t want to invest on an expensive piece of furniture only to find it won’t fit into the space you’ve allotted for it, right?
